Fivefold increase in IP traffic by 2013
According to a Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast and Methodology report for 2008-2013, in four years global IP traffic will reach 56 exabytes per month. Video transmission over broadband networks, mobile solutions and digital multi-tasking will have the greatest impact on the increase of global IP traffic.
The report was developed in order to estimate the growth IP network global traffic. Forecasts are based on Cisco's own analysis as well as models from independent analysts.
It is expected that global IP traffic will grow fivefold in the period from 2008-2013, culminating in 56 exabytes per month in 2013. In 2008, nine exabytes of data were sent monthly. By 2013, IP traffic in North America will be at 13 exabytes per month, with a similar rate in Western Europe - 12.5 exabytes per month. In first place will be the Middle and Far East (Asia Pacific) region, where IP traffic will reach 21 exabytes per month.
Such a large increase in network traffic may cause an increase in the delays of transmitting data over corporate links. One way to shorten the transmission of data is through accelerated WAN connections.
