Work in the warehouse

A warehouse is a place for storing and moving goods, raw materials, equipment, etc., within separated storage facilities. With a view to streamlining  warehouse work, we have developed systems dedicated to warehouse management.

A Warehouse Management System (WMS) is a comprehensive solution for coordinating storage-related tasks. They are highly-specialized systems which streamline all the processes occurring in warehouses. They are of great importance, above all, for logistics operators (service providers) who manage in their warehouses and terminals a large number of various shipments from many senders to many recipients.

WMS functions:

  • flawless location of goods in the warehouse
  • control over the flow of stock
  • efficient location of each item lot and each single shipment
  • automation of operations
  • work time optimization
  • quantity and assortment-based control of goods received, e.g., in terms of the compliance of a delivery with the relevant order

Storing goods is undoubtedly one of the fundamental functions of a warehouse. The process of storing goods involves a set of activities including taking delivery of resources, appropriate replenishing of stock in a particular place according to applied algorithms, and management. Goods should be stored in a systematized manner within the facility, which is divided into smaller elements composing a warehouse structure.

Stored goods are located so that it is easy to find them, and to enable order to be maintained while the warehouse space and capacity are used optimally.

A warehouse should be furnished with facilities for storing materials - carriers, different types of racks, containers, pallets, etc., as well as with appropriate equipment for internal transport, such as pallet jacks and so on.

A logistics unit is created by combining (grouping) the goods into a manipulative unit, mainly with the help of pallets, but also using cases, containers, carts and other goods carriers. Such a unit simplifies operations within the chain of deliveries in storage and transportation processes.

A carrier is the lowest logistics unit registered in the warehouse program. The most frequently used carrier is a pallet. Delivered goods are distributed into relevant loading units, which enable optimal storage. Carriers can be marked with a printed label which bears its symbol and, for instance, the stock level of a given assortment available at a given moment.

A barcode is a graphic registration of information via a combination of dark and light elements (lines), laid out according to the applied rules. Its purpose is to enable information to be loaded automatically. It is mainly used to mark goods destined for bulk and retail sale with the use of a code called UPC.

There are two versions of UPC: the basic 13-digit one (UPC-13) and an abbreviated eight-digit one (UPC-8), which facilitates placing a code on small-size packaging.

A UPC-13 contains 13 digits:

  • country no. (first three digits)
  • manufacturer or distributor no. (the following four to seven digits)
  • product no. (the next two to five digits)
  • control digit (the last digit)

A UPC-8 contains eight digits:

  • country no.
  • manufacturer no.
  • control digit
